Town History

Mount Hope is a town located in the northwestern part of Orange County New York. The first known settlers arrived in 1733. The town was created from the Towns of Deerpark and Wallkill in 1825.

 

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 25.5 square miles (66.0 km²), of which, 25.2 square miles (65.2 km²) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km²) of it (1.22%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 6,639 people, 1,582 households, and 1,218 families residing in the town. The population density was 263.5 people per square mile (101.8/km²).

The Village of Otisville is within the Town.

 

The Town is the home to the Otisville Federal Correctional Institute and the Otisville State Correctional Facility.
